05 July 2012 - Domestic & General Celebrates its Centenary

Domestic & General’s earliest predecessor, the Western Australian Insurance Company (WAICO), was founded on July 5th 1912 in Perth (WA) by Yorkshire entrepreneur Samuel Copley. The business moved to the UK in 1914, and a century later Domestic & General has developed into a thriving and growing business, with over 13 million customers in the UK, Western Europe and Australia - this time on the other side of the continent in Melbourne.

Over the years, we have evolved from providing insurance for cattle transportation through life, motor, caravan, pet and numerous other insurance arrangements.  One of the biggest breakthroughs, and the one that has led us to where we are today, was the launch of breakdown cover for televisions in 1950, originally under the Telesurance brand. Early TVs, using fragile cathode ray tube and valve technology, were the cutting-edge consumer goods of their day and people were keen to protect them. Using our specialist knowledge and working with a range of commercial partners, we quickly became known for the value and quality of our protection services.

Since then, we have evolved to become the leading specialist warranty services group - working with hundreds of business partners ranging from leading international manufacturers and retailers through to specialist repairers.

Group Chief Executive John Pearmund said, “This is a wonderful anniversary which we are delighted to celebrate. Our success is borne from our heritage, and we have built our knowledge through long-term relationships with millions of customers, and thousands of employees, all of whom we are delighted to recognise and thank.”
