Feel the benefits of a well looked-after washing machine

Nobody likes going out in dirty clothes. What's more, nobody likes having to wash clothes more than once - which is why it's so important you look after your washing machine and keep it working as efficiently as possible.

It can be easy to take washing machines for granted and we are quick to complain when items are not feeling or smelling as fresh as we'd like them to - but the bottom line is that if we look after our washing machine, it will look after our clothes.

We all care about our appearance and our outfits play a big part in this, so it only follows that we should also consider the condition of the appliance actually cleaning our shirts and skirts.

Can you remember the last time you did a job to benefit the performance of your washing machine? If the answer is no, then there is no time like the present to make a few changes. Looking after your machine doesn't have to be taxing - and following our top tips below will ensure the appliance remains in top working condition for a good while yet.

The best ways to look after your washing machine:

1 - Service washes
One of the easiest ways to keep your washing machine clean is by letting the appliance do the hard work for you in the form of a service wash. Also known as a maintenance wash, this cycle is recommended by manufacturers and is a great way to clean parts of the machine that cannot be reached by hand. Service washes will use the hottest cycles of between 60 and 95 degrees and should be performed around once a month - although those who use the machine often might do this more regularly, while people who use it sparingly can use the function more sparingly. Easy!

2 - Regular wipe downs
You regularly wipe down other surfaces in your kitchen, so why not give the washing machine a quick going over as well? Ideally, you should wipe the door seal and glass down after every time you use the appliance, while leaving the door slightly ajar after each use will allow air to circulate and dry the drum. Those of you who store stain removers and other cleaning products on top of the washing machine should keep an eye out for any marks left by these items. Again, regularly wiping down the exterior of the appliance will mean any missed spills will not remain unnoticed for long.

3 - Cleaning the drawer
One of the trickiest parts of a washing machine to keep clean is the drawer. This section can sometimes get clogged up and is often found to be the source of a leak. If there is a blockage, then it is unlikely the conditioner will be able to leave the compartment. To reduce the risk of this happening, fully remove the drawer and give it a good clean. An effective way of doing this is to use a toothbrush , while these can also be good for removing dirt in the dispenser compartment that houses the jets.
