Buying a new washing machine? Or moving your current one to a new space? If so, it’s a good idea to measure it first.

By measuring your machine, you’ll avoid issues with it not fitting the space. But squash it in too tightly and you could block the ventilation and airflow.

Don't worry – this guide will show you how to correctly measure your washing machine.

Key dimensions to measure

These are the measurements you’ll need to take:

  • Height – from the floor to the top of your machine
  • Width – from one side to the other (making sure there’s room for airflow)
  • Depth – from the front to the back, including any knobs or hoses

With these measurements to hand, replacing or moving your washing machine should be simple.

How to measure your washing machine

1. Prepare the area
Turn off the power and water supply. Make sure there’s enough room to pull your washing machine out.

2. Pull the machine out
Gently pull it out so you can measure its height, width and depth. If your machine’s heavy, ask someone to help you. Be careful not to damage any pipes or cables (or yourself).

3. Take the measurements
Grab a tape measure – steel ones are the most accurate (as cloth tape measures can stretch or warp over time). Jot down your measurements as you go.

  • Height: Measure from the floor to the top of the machine, including anything that sticks up
  • Width: Measure across the widest part of your machine, leaving room for airflow on both sides
  • Depth: Measure from the front to back and remember to include space for knobs or hoses

Double-check your measurements – just to be sure. (And remember to note if they’re in centimetres or inches.)

Tips for when you replace your washing machine

Here’s a few things to bear in mind if you’re planning on getting a new washing machine:

  • Check the connections
Ensure the washing machine’s hoses and connections work with your current setup.
  • Integrated or freestanding?
Be sure to choose a machine that's right for the space you have.
  • Ventilation
Leave room for air to circulate around your machine.
