A leading Nottingham charity which works tirelessly to tackle rising homelessness has moved a giant step closer to its goals – as it receives the backing from one of the city’s largest employers Domestic & General.
The Friary, based in West Bridgford, was set up more than two decades ago to help the homeless, boost employment skills and provide companionship. In that time, it has helped hundreds of vulnerable people – supporting them to get back into work and turn their lives around.

Domestic & General provides warranty services for UK and international clients and comprehensive product protection for more than 15 million customers, and earlier this year announced The Friary as its chosen local charity.

Employing more than 900 people at its Talbot Street office, the contact centre’s employees offer much needed support to volunteers at The Friary both financially through fund-raising – and through volunteering opportunities.

Craig White, customer service director at Domestic & General, said: “We are delighted to announce that we have chosen The Friary as our local charity for 2015.

“It is such a worthwhile cause and does some fantastic work. We will be helping in any way we can which could mean helping out in the kitchens, donating what we can or giving skills workshops to The Friary’s users.”

The Friary is open three days a week helping disadvantaged people who may be homeless, need help getting back into the community and work or simply need a hot meal and fresh clothes.

It deals with anywhere between 80 to 120 people per session and that number remains high, says Helen Jones, from The Friary.

“We are so pleased to get this backing from Domestic & General; it will be a massive help to the work we are doing,” she said.

“At The Friary it’s often people’s basic needs to live that we fulfil. We want to expand on the services we offer so that they can be a lifeline for the Nottingham community.

“We want to find a long term solution and tackle the problems facing our communities and be more than a quick fix, we believe having the backing of Domestic & General will put us one step closer to achieving this goal.”

The Friary was founded in 1988 by Ann Bremner MBE. It is a registered charity empowering homeless and vulnerable adults to rebuild their lives by offering practical services, advice and emotional support.
